Review images on pages that attract product and service searches

Review images on pages that attract product and service searches. Practical steps to connect relevant search visits with informed customer enquiries.

Image SEO combines useful visual information, accessible descriptions and appropriate delivery. A filename or keyword-filled alternative cannot compensate for an image that fails to explain the product or slows the opening mobile screen.

Imagine a hypothetical product page with a detailed installation photograph. Customers need to inspect a mounting point, while mobile visitors should receive a suitably sized first view rather than the full original camera file.

Choose images that explain

Show the detail that helps someone compare, understand or prepare a decision. A decorative photograph can establish a mood but does not demonstrate a product's features or the work performed. Connect each image to the visitor's question at that point, rather than selecting pictures only to fill empty layout space.

Choose a close-up of the mounting point when the surrounding text discusses installation clearance. A generic photograph of a finished room may look attractive but cannot demonstrate that detail. Retain a wider view where scale matters, and identify which product or configuration is actually shown rather than implying every variant looks identical.

Describe the function through alt text

An informative image's text alternative should express its meaning in context without keyword lists. A decorative image may need an empty alternative so assistive technology can skip it. The same file can have different roles on different pages; assess its purpose rather than applying one automatic description everywhere.

An alternative such as wall bracket leaving clearance below the unit conveys a relevant feature when that is the image's purpose. Do not mechanically prepend image of or list related search phrases. If a linked image is the only contact control, its accessible alternative should instead explain that action or destination.

Provide nearby explanation

Place the image next to the relevant passage and add a caption when it contributes information. A descriptive filename helps identify a file but cannot replace page content. Explain what a technical detail shows for visitors unfamiliar with the subject, instead of assuming a close-up photograph will be self-explanatory.

A caption can identify the illustrated configuration and explain a detail that is too lengthy for a concise alternative. Keep essential dimensions in adjacent text or an accessible table, rather than embedding them only in pixels. People viewing a small screen need the same decision information without having to decipher tiny labels.

Balance file size and useful detail

Deliver suitable dimensions and compression without losing information customers need to see. Consider responsive variants that the browser can select for the available space. A product photograph designed for enlargement needs a different decision from a small illustration in a contents list, even if both begin as large source files.

Provide responsive image candidates sized for their likely display widths and let the browser select appropriately. Compare WebP, AVIF or another suitable format against visual detail and actual file size; no format is universally smallest. Inspect text, sharp edges and product colours after compression, especially when those features influence comparison.

Prevent movement during loading

Reserve space so text and contact buttons do not jump when an image appears. Check the mobile layout. Do not automatically defer the main image in the opening screen; images further down may load later when appropriate. Test the visible experience rather than treating one loading attribute as universally beneficial.

Declare dimensions or a consistent aspect ratio to reserve layout space before the file arrives. Check that the important product detail remains visible under mobile cropping. Avoid lazy-loading a prominent opening image when it delays the principal visible content; defer lower-page photographs where that suits the actual page and loading sequence.

Check access and the destination

Confirm files remain reachable after migration and review image-search data where relevant. An image click is not a sale. Its destination should provide the commercial information still needed for a decision, with a clear product or service context and a practical next step for someone arriving through the picture.

After changing an image pipeline, open a delivered file and confirm it still returns an accessible image rather than an error or login response. Check the page reached through image search too. A useful image destination identifies the product and supplies context, availability boundaries and a clear route for an appropriate question.

Choose visuals for their explanatory role, then check alternatives, dimensions and mobile delivery together. An image should improve the decision without withholding essential information from people who cannot see it.
